Ascent occupies the entire grand stairway, culminating on the 4th floor. The images of mountains and pipelines, sublime peaks and peak oil are drawn from research at The Banff Centre and the oil sands. The rugged paintings are sliced and spliced, evoking the struggle of societal and personal transformation.
Phil Irish holds degrees from York (MFA) and Guelph (BA). He has exhibited at artist-run, public, and commercial galleries. His work was featured at the Quebec City Biennial, and shortlisted for the Kingston Prize. He has developed new work at residencies in Quebec, Newfoundland, and most recently The Banff Centre.
