Surrealestate: The Xmas Tree Project
The desire to seek out moments of nature in the urban landscape is a common experience. A view or a vista commands a high price. So does our habit of consuming nature. Every year we throw out thousands of Christmas trees, a powerful symbol of tradition and consumption—the disposable culture on The Gladstone rooftop, a fake landscape of discarded Christmas trees and mirrors, becomes a surreal place that will reflect the glitz of Christmas while simultaneously highlighting the ritual consumption of nature. Staged as a natural pine forest, the fake landscape compliments the materiality of its existence and location.
