TAXA WORK (John Taylor Bachman, Can Vu Bui, Vincent Calabro, Lane Rick, Katie Stranix) | Room 205

The hotel room is as private as it is impersonal: the room is at once yours and yours alone, but also a more enduring space, continuously occupied by a revolving door of strangers, and rarely the same person twice. Overworld draws on this palimpsest of occupancy, and one room becomes two, one on top of the other. Below, bodies crouch and collide through the tactile confines of the unfurnished room. The dropped ceiling is low, awkward even; to stand comfortably, visitors must poke their heads through a hole in the dividing plane, into the Overworld. It's a surreal atmospheric place. An unknowable other world with its own light, time, and space. Balanced between the two zones, the occupant confronts the thin line between the banal and the ephemeral. Overworld is where the spectacle undermines the real, and the relentless allure of intrigue hovers just out of reach.

TAXA WORK is a collective of immense geography. Its members are united by a shared fascination with the otherworldly and transformative qualities of space and architecture. TAXA WORK occupies and functions in the liminal space between New York, Chicago, and Shanghai.
